Treasure Chest Thursday -- The Lord's Supper

It was the year 2003 when we moved to Florida to be closer to my husband's family.

When ever we went over to Ma's house (We call her ma because she was married to his dad - long story) I would admire the beautiful Lord's Supper picture that she had hanging in her kitchen. Starting that year I was on a quest to find the right Lord's Supper for my own kitchen.

It was probably about 2004 when I finally found the one I wanted. It was at an antique store in Glenn St. Mary, FL. The picture and the frame, I believe, were made some time around 1940 or 50.

I must have admired it hanging in the store about four or five times. I didn't really want to pay what they wanted for it. Finally, I decided that I was going to go get it. Well when I went to get it, it was gone -- go figure.

Months later Christmas morning I opened one of the presents from hubby and low and behold there was that precious Lord's Supper picture! It turns out that he went to the house of the woman that owned it and purchased it from her!

Needless to say, this is a very special treasure to me.

1944 Postcard to Mrs. Yvonne Saucier

I found this wonderful postcard at the Bargain House of Fleas in Jax. If I collected postcards, this would definitely be a keeper; I love hobo clowns. However, I would be more happy to reunite this postcard with any of Mrs. Yvonne Saucier's relatives who would appreciate it, or even relatives of the mysterious Helen.

The postcard reads:
Mrs. Yvonne Saucier
Fifth St
Leominster, Mass

Hi Yvonne,
How's everything at
the shop? Oh how I
miss the place. Came
down here Wed. and
I'm having a swell
time. Naturally.
Will see you pretty
soon. Am coming
home Sat nite.
Love,
Helen
I have been able to find out a couple of things about Yvonne Saucier, but more about the rest of her family. First I found one of her sister's obituaries stating her place of residence was 11 Fifth Street in Leominster, MA which is where the postcard was addressed.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- Grandma Dunn's Jewelry

These pieces of jewelry belonged to my maternal grandmother. My mother had them in her jewelry box and she let me have them.

The two on the top are I guess what you would call broaches (I just call them pins). I really like the one with the aquamarine colored stone. I think it is beautiful.

The other two are clip on earrings. They are so pretty and sparkly that I just had to wear them. I don't think I made it through the whole day with them on. Those things are painful!! I really don't know how the ladies wore them back then.Thank goodness for pierced ears!

When I was growing up no one was aloud to have pierced ears in our house. So guess what I did on my 18th birthday?! I think we were all shocked when grandma got her ears pierced some time in the eighties. That is one of the main reasons she didn't need these pretty earrings any more.

Payroll Time Book 1948

I was walking through the Bargain House of Fleas in Jacksonville one day and I found this interesting little book. It is a monthly time book to keep track of payroll. It is dated Jan 1948 to Aug 1948. Sadly, there is no indication of the name of the company. There is however something written up in the top right corner that has faded over time. I can't make out what it says, but it's possible that it could be a company name.

Without the name of the company I can't really pinpoint its location or anything about the workers.

Below is a list of the employees and their occupation as they appear in the book.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- More of Grandma Smedley's Stuff

Here are more items that I rescued from grandma's house. There are five of the juice glasses and only two of the tall glasses. I broke one of the tall glasses myself, I don't know what happened to the others. I have been looking high and low for replacements and haven't had any luck.

We always drank orange juice out of the small ones and milk out of the big ones. Well, I did any way.

The steak knives I don't remember ever using while we were at grandma's, but I sure remember them sitting in the silverware drawer 'cause I always thought they were neat.

And then there is the tablecloth -- these things are precious to me because they take me back in time to grandma's kitchen with all the cousins and aunts and uncles where we would all sit at the dinner table. Grandma always made sure everyone had their fill before leaving the table. I think some of us ate more just to make her feel better even though we couldn't eat another bite. I remember smiling and laughing inside as I watched grandpa hold his spoon like a shovel and slurp his soup, his bowl of peaches, and the morning mush. But now my eyes water 'cause I miss him so much.
