Bishop/Carey Orphan Photo Album - Good News!

I have great news! The Bishop/Carey family photo album has finally found a home! The album will begin it's journey today to join a relative connected through the Davis side. However, there are a few more pages I want to share with you. Today is page 14.

The photo on the upper left is Elizabeth Hill Davis Carey, and the upper right is her husband, Rev. Archibald Carey.

The lower left is the Rev. holding a great-grandchild. The one on the lower right has no identifying notation, but it's safe to say that the gentleman is Archibald Carey, Jr.

Elizabeth Hill Davis Carey was the daughter of Madison and Ella Church Davis. Madison Davis was born a slave September of 1833 in Athens, Georgia. In 1868 Davis was elected to represent Clarke County in the Georgia House of Representatives.

The lucky recipient of this family treasure is a great-great-grandson of Madison and Ella Church Davis. His great-grandfather was James Perry Davis who was the brother of the above Elizabeth.

I would like to share a little snippet of his email:

"I saw your post about the lost photo album, and I have a family tree covering most of the people you've identified, who are distant family members of mine. Elizabeth Davis Carey, Archibald Carey's wife, was the leading daughter in the family of famous Madison Davis, who was an ex-slave legislator in Georgia during Reconstruction. Elizabeth's brother, James Perry Davis is my great-grandfather and took care of me as my babysitter when I was a child, so I know a lot about the family."

"...a slave named Madison Davis, who is my great-great grandfather. In 1856, he marries another slave named Ella Church. Ella's father is Alonzo Church, then-President of the University of Georgia, and her mother was one of Alonzo's women slaves (perhaps named Louise, who after emancipation comes to be known as Louise Ramsey). Can you imagine having a family photo album that contains generations of influentual and prominent pillars of a community?

Dr. Elizabeth "Beth" Bishop Davis - Founder of the Department of Psychiatry at Harlem Hospital Center which she directed for 17 years. (I believe the album was originally hers.)
Rev. Shelton Hale Bishop - A driving force behind founder, well-known psychiatrist Frederic Wertham, in the establishment of the Lafargue Clinic in 1946.
Bishop Archibald J. Carey, Sr. - A powerful leader in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and engaged in a political career.
Archibald J. Carey, Jr. - An influential American lawyer, judge, politician, diplomat and clergyman.
Eloise Carey Bishop - Author

I consider myself proud to have had such an album in my possesion for a short time. I am sure it will be well appreciated and cherished in it's new home.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Mom's Doll

Last week I went up home to Idaho to visit the family. While I was there I took pictures of all the family treasures; the ones that I couldn't bring back with me. Well I think they are treasures.

This is mom's doll. Unfortunately I don't know much about it. I neglected to get the details of how and when she came to own it.

She used to let me play with it once in a while. It slept in a box up in her closet with a few more outfits as bedding.

Poor thing has seen better days. It's probably a good thing mom quit letting me play with her when she did.

This is page 11 of the Bishop/Carey family photo album that I found.

According to the inscriptions on these photos they were taken in June of 1939 at the Bennington Woman's college campus in Vermont.

In the second row of photos we have Eloise and Moe in the first one, and Eloise, Margie and Betty in the second one.

The gal in the bottom photo is Eloise II.

I am guessing that Paramount developed the photo and made the film, but I certainly can't find anything about them producing personal photographs.

This is page 9 of the Bishop/Carey family photo album that I found. There are no inscriptions on back to indicate who are in these photos, but I can make an educated guess as to the identity of a couple of them.

The man sporting the hat and collar in the top left photo is none other than Rev. Archibald Carey, Sr., a political activist, writer, and religious leader.

The young man in the upper right photo is his son, Archibald Carey, Jr. Chicago politician and minister were among his many titles. The young man in the lower right photo is also Archibald Carey, Jr.

This photo does have writing on the back telling where and when it was taken, but not who is in the picture.

I believe it is Elizabeth Bishop. This photo was obviously taken on the same trip as this one. According to the writing on the back of this photo it was taken in the Spitzstein mountains at Sachrang during Whitsuntide in 1937.

Hopefully someday I will find a Bishop/Carey descendant to give this precious photo album to.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Kissing Cows

I will treasure these darling little kissing cow salt and pepper shakers forever!

Why? Not because I am crazy about cow salt and pepper shakers, but because of how I got them.

This past August 5th hubby and I went on vacation. Hubby hasn't taken a vacation from work since 2003.

We went to visit friends in Indiana and Ohio and on the way back home we drove through the Smokey Mountains. Not only was this our first vacation together in 11 years, but we haven't been in the mountains just as long. We love mountains!

We stayed one day and night at the Gatlinburg Inn in Tennessee. It was awesome, like staying at your grandma's house. We went to the Smokey Mountain Winery and did some wine tasting (yum). We bought 1 bottle of Mountain Red, 1 bottle of Raspberry wine, and 2 bottles of Muscadine White and the neatest little bottle stopper.

Then I saw The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum. They have some pretty cool shakers in there, but most of the ones they have for sale are priced way too high. Later that day we walked up and down the street and I had to check out Maples' Tree and that's where I found these cute little cows, and they were the last pair!

So when I look at these cows, I will smile and think about the wonderful trip through the Smokies that hubby and I shared.

There is only one photo that has something written on the back.

Unfortunately it doesn't say who it is, but I think it is Elizabeth Bishop.

The picture was taken in 1937 while sailing the Chiemsee
during Whitsuntide.

I believe the photo on the top is her brother Sheldon Hale Bishop, Jr. and the photo on the bottom right is Sheldon and their mother Eloise Carey Bishop.

Unfortunately there is no writing on the back of these photos to identify the subjects, but I believe I know who three of them are.

In the top left photo I believe the woman in the middle is Eloise Carey Bishop, and the girl on her left is her daughter Elizabeth Bishop.

In the top right photo the woman on the left is Eloise Bishop.

The bottom left photo is Archibald J. Carey, Jr and Elizabeth Bishop. They were cousins.

Eloise and Elizabeth are the only ones I can identify in the bottom right photo.

Elsa Daher's 1917 report card is on it's way home to family members!

I received an email from a great-niece of "Elsie's" a couple of days ago. She informed me that Elsie and her husband never had any children. They lived on the original homestead where her parents settled after immigrating from Germany.

It does my heart good to send this family treasure where it belongs, in the home of a family member who will truly appreciate it.

I have also located the Bishop family in the 1930 Manhattan Census.

There is only one photo on this page that is labeled. I am not positive, but I think the handsome looking gentleman in the suit is Shelton Bishop, Jr.

Apparently this photo was taken while she was a junior at Barnard College. Elizabeth was a graduate of Barnard College and received her M.D. from the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, in 1949. Elizabeth passed away last year in February. There was an article about her death in Harlem World Magazine.

It took me a while to find an actual obituary for her, I guess because she used different names. I also found notes of condolences. I now know that she has descendants so hopefully I will be able to make contact.

TRUSSELL , ELIZABETH DAVIS--Elizabeth Davis, professionally known as Elizabeth B. Davis, MD died on February 1, 2010 at the age of 89. She was professor emerita of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University and was the founder of the Department of Psychiatry at Harlem Hospital Center which she directed for 17 years. She was the daughter and granddaughter of two rectors of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in New York City. She became the widow of Ray E. Trussell, MD of New York City after 32 years of marriage. She is survived by a brother Shelton Hale Bishop, Jr., a daughter Liberty M. Rashad, three grandsons, six great-grandchildren, one nephew, two stepdaughters Margaret Hardy and Susan Stedman, their families and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10th at St. Philip's Church, 204 West 134th Street, NYC. Viewing at 10am, service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, we are requesting that donations be made to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in her name.

Bishop/Carey Family Photo Album - Oh What a Find!

This last weekend hubby and I hit the Ramona Flea market in Jacksonville. I found an old photo album full of photos. It wasn't until I got home and really examined it and spent some time on Google did I discover just how important this family photo album could be.

I am not sure which family member owned the album or how it ever got separated from family members, but I hope to find some living descendants.

Does the name Rev. Archibald Carey, Sr. or his son Rev. Archibald Carey, Jr ring any bells? How about Rev. Shelton Hale Bishop? Honestly, I never heard of them before, but I am learning all about them now.

Rev. Bishop was the fifth rector of St. Philip's Church in Harlem, the second oldest black congregation in the Episcopal Church. He was a driving force behind founder, well-known psychiatrist Frederic Wertham, in the establishment of the Lafargue Clinic in 1946. It was housed in St. Philip's providing counseling and psychotherapy for Harlem residents at a cost of 25 cents per visit. It was the first mental health clinic in the world to serve people of color. It operated from the end of WWII until the 1960s when Elizabeth Bishop Davis, MD, a volunteer at the clinic and daughter of Rev. Shelton Bishop, became the first Chief of Psychiatry at Harlem Hospital.

Rev. Bishop was married to the sister of Rev. Archibald Carey. After today I will post one page at a time and share what I have learned about this family.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Watkins Antiseptic Powder

You are probably wondering, "what's so special about an old unopened can of antiseptic powder?"

It's not because I collect old powder tins. It's not even because it might be worth something (not much, I'm sure). It's where I found it.

For a better understanding, I point you to my very first Treasure Chest Thursday post.

I found this in grandma's fruit cellar the same day I found my special shoe box.

Hubby and I were in Bear Lake and we went over to grandma Smedley's house to get what I could before they sold the house.

I collected some photos for me and some that I thought the siblings would want. I gathered other things for no other reason than they triggered memories.

We strolled around the yard and I had to come to the hard reality that I would never be able to come back. This family home would no longer belong to our family.

I drug hubby to the fruit cellar to check it out and found the powder. Now when I look at it, I think about the home canned cherries, pears, apples, and peaches that used to be kept down there. I can see the old stainless steel pot with a broken handle that sat at the top of the stairs that led into the cellar. That's where grandma would scrape all the left over mush or what ever else we didn't eat to feed all the cats in the neighborhood.

I can stand at the foot of the cellar and look out towards the barn (or where it used to be) where I had so much fun as a child. I can hear grandma say, "Calvin! Will you get some fruit from the cellar."

I treasure this can of powder not only because it's cool, but because it's a key that opens the gate to a whole flood of precious memories.

A couple of weeks ago we were at the Ramon Flea Market and I couldn't resist purchasing this book when I saw it.

Just looking at it takes me back to when I was young and visiting with grandma Piggott. She had this along with other Dr. Suess books and for some reason this was my favorite one.

I hope that someday my grandkids will be able to come to grandma's house and read this book.

Surviving are three sons, Frank and Harry of Byron and Wilwood of Lovell; one daughter, Rose G. Doty of Byron; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kendall Yorgasen, John Christofferson, Kenneth Doty, Oris Doty, Paul Davids and Clyde Griffin.

1944 Postcard From Future Flyboy?

It is postmarked MIDLAND, TEXAS, Aug 28, 1944, and addressed to The Rawlins & Collerains, Box 393, Lake Jackson, Texas. Unfortunately the author only signed his initials and I can't be quite positive who this flyboy is for sure, but Google has helped me find a trail of bread crumbs that leads to Rawlins and Collerain families.

Bread crumb no. 1 - The following information is from Descendants of James Mason Rawlins.

316. Addison Clark⁶ Rawlins (James Alfred⁵, John Martin⁴, William Martin³, James A.², James Mason¹) was born 30 July 1878. He married (1) MaryEmmaline Alexander, daughter of Marcus Alexander and Nancy WORLEY. She was born 16 November 1883 in Dallas, TX, and died 01 February 1971 in Altus, Jackson, OK. He married (2) Annie Kinnard 1896 in Rockett, Texas. She died 1951.

Notes for Addison Clark Rawlins:
Lived 51 Vinca Court, Lake Jackson, Texas.

Children of Addison Rawlins and Annie Kinnard are:

I am leaning towards that the author may be Addison C. Rawlins II, but not positive. Hopefully there is a Rawlins or Collerain family relative who can solve this mystery and claim this wonderful lost family treasure.

Esther Edson photos circa 1900 and 1918

The above photos are in the possession of one of my cousins. Since we have been able to find no direct lineage to connect her to my cousin, she has graciously offered these photos to any Edson family relatives I am able to find.

This beautiful young lady is Esther Edson. I have been able to find a little bit about her, but lose her after the 1910 census. She must have got married sometime between 1910 and 1920. My cousin's great-grandfather's brother, John Colborn was married to her great-grandmother's sister, Belle Jolls. The 1900 Loup, Merrick County, Nebraska Census has Esther Edson age 4 living with her parents Frank and Ida two houses down from John and Belle Colborn. At first I thought that she could have been a niece of my cousin's great-grandparents, that either Esther's mother Ida, or her father Frank Edson may have been a sibling to either Abraham Colborn or Jennie Jolls. but I haven't been able to find anything. I think we came to the conclusion that Esther's parents were just close family friends with either the Colborn or Jolls family. Then again, just because I can't find a family connection doesn't mean that there isn't. If anyone knows anything about these families, sure would appreciate any info.

   I need to know three questions.
1. Could Henry Bake have been born in Salford Manchester England?
(It is a part of Manchester.)
2. The other thing is what church did Henry Bake belong to before he joined the Mormon church?
3. What is Mrs. Everett Bakes address?
   I'm sorry you have been ill. Maybe now that spring is here you will feel better.
   I wanted to say this man who is doing research for us in Eng. isn't charging anything so we are putting your $5 & $3 away until he quits looking then we will do pd. research. He answered our add in the paper & he is clerk of the Records Office in Manchester. I think he is wonderful & it is wonderful to find him. H has access to a lot of old records if we can find things to help him. We are in a better position to put a little money in too. We surely appreciate the money & will make it do everything we can. When you are short of money it counts more too.
   He have us a wonderful history of a Mayor James Bake of Manchester & where he was buried etc.

This week I received another packet of goodies that grandma Hazel had saved. I was excited to get a copy of two different wills among several letters. This letter that my grandfather wrote to his father was among them.

Dear Father,
   Happy Birthday to you and may you have many more of them.
  I am sorry that I didn't get this letter to you on time for you birthday but it was remembered by us any way. I seem to have time for every thing else but writing letters.
  I just got located to write you yesterday and Tom came over and wanted me to help him plant peas out in the Krogue field he is planting 10 acres of them. he sure likes the field.
  How are you getting along wth your health and your job.
We have sure had a lot of sickness the last month the children have all taken their turns at being sick. Jean is sick now she has the flue and has surly fell of a lot in weight.
   Blanche is giving the twins a birthday party today and they have just come from school and are trying to tell about the lickings the kids gave them in school today.
  Well my pigs have just farrowed and I have at present 16 little ones they are nice pigs so I should have a lot of pork this fall.
  I am still working on the railroad from 4-1 aloop at night. I guess I will be there about a month longer and then I will have to start the saw mill going. I expect to have a new chev. truck any day now it should be here.
I am also getting lots of bills for lumber from Pocatello. I can make quite a little by delivering it there.
  Dad, of all the jobs I have had there is none like working for your self.
Have you heard from Dave lately, we haven't it is because we ow him a letter I sure put of my writing to any one.
  Eugene Hart has just came back for the summer.
  I thought that maby some of you would be down the first of the month. you had better all get on the buss and spend a few days up here with us.
Ermen Stevens is going to kill a pig today and want me to help scald it before I go to work. I'll bet you folks would like to have a pig in a locker down there now. I'll bet it is sure hard to get the things you need to eat down there. We will see what we can do about those conditions this fall. Well Dad I guess I will have to close it is about time to go to work and I can think of no more to write.

I received this beautiful piece of artwork in the mail a couple of days ago from my 3 year old grandson. This is the first artwork ever from one of my grandchildren so it will probably end up in a frame.

I am sharing a Christmas treasure today.

This boot was crocheted by my grandma Blanche and she gave it to me for Christmas sometime in the late eighties.

This is it's first Christmas in Florida. It has been in a box with my other Christmas stuff still sitting in mom's basement in Idaho since 2003.

It used to have an empty quart sized milk carton with the top cut off inside to put nuts or candy in, but I had to throw it away cause it got all yucky. So last week I bought a quart of eggnog so I could use the carton when it was empty.

Well a couple of days ago I finally found some old fashioned Christmas hard candy after searching for days.

It comes in it's own container so I was able to just slip it inside the boot.

It looks like Susan had a step-mother by 1870. Since she was about 12 years old in 1870 I estimate that the photo was taken around 1875.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Barker-Pickett Family Reunion

I found this Barker - Pickett Family Newsletter among the items that Daniell scanned for me. Even though there is a page missing it's a priceless little treasure to me because I never knew that there were Barker family reunions.

Page 2 of this particular newsletter is missing. Page 1 announces that this is the last newsletter and I especially love these two sentences - "Save your copies please. In twenty years or so those of us still living and descendants not yet born will value them."

It also announced "The end of the reunion". No fair, I never got to go to one, or so I thought until mom told me that this picture was taken at a Barker family reunion.

Treasure Chest Thursday - The Cannon Chronicle

Among grandma Hazel's things are a few issues of The Cannon Chronicle which is a leaflet put out by The George Cannon Family Association. This one in particular pulled on my heart strings because it has a picture that I have never seen before of the house in Nauvoo, Illinois where George and Mary Edwards Cannon(my 3rd gr-great-grandparents)lived in 1844.

It also includes an interesting interview with Charles Dickens and George Q. Cannon.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Salt and Pepper Shakers

A while back I found these salt and pepper shakers at a flea market. I could not resist them because grandma Smedley had a pair just like them.

Even though they aren't the exact ones that sat on her table, I treasure them just the same. When I look at them I am immediately transported back in time to grandma's dinner table surrounded by any amount of family members. I can smell her pot roast. The table is fully set with plates, glasses and silverware. In the middle of the table is a small plate stacked with bread next to a cube of butter. There's a bottle of home canned peaches, pears, or cherries and a stack of bowls to put them in. Open bottles of home canned bread & butter pickles and pickled beets, with a spoon stuck in each, sitting next to the salt and pepper shakers. And best of all, there is grandpa wearing a flannel shirt sitting in his usual spot holding his spoon like a toothbrush and slurping up his peaches (If it was morning, he would be slurping his mush). And that my friends, is a wonderful place to be!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Grandma's Stationary

Among the items that Daniell scanned for me was this sheet of stationary from the courthouse where grandma Piggott worked.

I thought it was neat to see the word "deputy" listed after her name. I never knew that was her title. I used to love visiting her while she was at work. One of the judges always gave us a wintergreen lifesaver when we were there. And there is just something about wondering around a creaky old building (it was creaky even back then).

Boy, if I would have known about twenty years ago that I could have sat in that very courthouse and looked through archives I would have way more documentation than I do now!

About a month ago hubby and I stopped at a yard sale on our way back from the Waldo Flea Market. Boy did I find a treasure there! Not only one, but two Kurdish Bibles that belonged to Dr. Charles V. Perrill.

These inscriptions are hard to read, but I will attempt to transcribe what it says. At the top it has his name.

I found this bio in a 2007 Fall/winter issue of PENNMedicine Magazine.

I was also able to find an 8 page personal account that was published in the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Warm Fuzzy Grandpas

When I came back from my visit to Idaho last May I was able to fit a few things in my suitcase that had been stashed in boxes down in mom's basement for let's see, seven years now. One of those things was this precious treasure:

The frame is pretty and all, but the true treasure is the warm and fuzzy lookin' guy inside the frame. I call him grandpa Marv.

Grandpa Marv and grandma Marge gave this photo to us for Christmas one year. They aren't "related" to me, but he was my grandpa in every way that counts. We kind of adopted each other around 1997.

Hubby never had a positive male role model growing up and grandpa filled that hole till it was overflowing. I was only fortunate to know one of my real grandfathers. I did share some moments with him, but not as much as I liked. I think the older grandkids got the best of him.

No matter what was going on in my life grandpa Marv would always be there for me and hubby. We spent so many wonderful times fishing, camping, and getting together for the holidays. But, the best times were when we just went down to hang out and visit at their house, which felt like home to me.

I was reading through some of my journals and found some entries about him (a search button sure would have been handy!)and I wanted to share them with you.

I am not in the best of spirits today. Grandpa Marv had a heart attack yesterday...
I went to see him today...
Grandpa seemed to be doing alright. It was hard to see him like that -- hooked up to wires and tubes in his nose. I wish he would quit smoking!

They are going to do an angiogram in the morning. I was looking in the gift shop while I was up there, and I saw the cutest little thing. I just had to get it for him. It was a stuffed toad all dressed in fishing clothes and holding a fishing pole with a fish on the line. Grandpa is my fishing buddy you know.

August 14, 2001
It was just after 9 when I got home from work last night and noticed from the caller id that grandpa Marvin called. I called back and it was hubby saying that grandpa wasn't doing so good and that I should come down and see him.

They had just taken all the ivs out of his arms and I believe today or tomorrow they are going to unhook him from the oxygen per his request.

I got right in the car and went to grandma's. Grandpa was lying in his bed. I sat down by the bed and held his hand and squeezed. He opened his eyes and said, "Did you get your teeth fixed?" I told him,"Yes, I sure did."

He was on his pain medication so he was sleepy. His stomach is so bloated, and it is so hard for him to breath; even with the oxygen.

It was so hard to see him like that - my sweet old honey grandpa lying there helpless. He is ready to go, I know. He is tired of being a burden (not) and just can't take anymore. I understand, but I just can't bear the thought of losing him.

I told grandpa I loved him and kissed him on the mouth and we went home.

August 19, 2001
Grandpa died yesterday around 5 p.m. in his sleep. He went peacefully, my sweet, honey, grandpa.

POCATELLO ID Marvin Daniel Whitworth, 73, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness. Marvin (Marv) was born on June 18, 1928, at Inkom, Idaho, to Francis (Frank) and Katheryn O. Whitworth. He grew up in Chesterfield, attending school in Inkom, Bancroft and Pocatello.

On October 6, 1950, he married Margaret (Marge) A. Valentine at Chesterfield, Idaho. He ranched in the Chesterfield, Eight Mile, south of Soda Springs, and the Doc Newton Ranch on Marsh Creek Road. He began employment for Idaho Portland Cement (Ash Grove) in 1957, became a foreman until his retirement in 1991.
Marvin and his wife, Marge, had a race horse training business from 1969 until 1984. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and summers with his family and friends at his retirement home located at Cedar Bay Marina, Henry, Idaho.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marge, Inkom; four daughters, Terry Lish and Marilyn Brown, both of Inkom; Jackie (Dennis) Davis and Marian (Marvin) Shappart, Pocatello; three granddaughters, Leslie (Dan) Bull and Totonka, Sharlene Gonzalas and Kim Jones; three grandsons, Spencer, Terry and Troy (Teresa) Davis; three great-grandsons, Andrew, Anthony Gonzalas and Kyle (Powers) Davis; his father, Francis (Frank) Whitworth, Inkom; sisters, Darla (Jud) Tolman, Portland, Oregon; Iris (Gordon) Bernier, Inkom; brothers, Arden (Norma) Whitworth and Albert (Karen) Whitworth, all of Inkom. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his honorary family of Robbie and Margurite Davis of New York.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Katheryn; and a brother, Steven Whitworth; grandsons, Juston D. Corson Whitworth and Heath A. Lish.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Inkom L.D.S. Church with Bishop David Hunt of the Rapid Creek Ward conducting.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 North 15th Ave., Pocatello, and also at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. He will be laid to rest in the Inkom Cemetery.

I wrote this poem and put it on two different backqrounds, one for grandma and one for me.

I have been thinking of him for two days now and I am about out of tissues.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- Grandpa's Brand Record

While I was in Bear Lake this last May I went through newspaper clippings and whatnots that my aunt had stashed in envelopes. Actually I went through them on the car ride back to Pocatello because we didn't find them until the last minute.

I set aside all the things that I wanted copies of and good ole cousin Daniel scanned them for me. Among the scanned goodies was grandpa's official Brand Record.

I also have uncle Ollie's original brand certificate that was among grandma Hazel's things. He lived with great-grandma and grandpa Piggott.

I wasn't aware that you could read a brand. I found a couple of sites about livestock brands and how to read them that might come in handy if you have ranchers, farmers, or cowboys in your ancestry.

Update: Thanks to a cousin on Facebook who saw my post I now know what uncle Ollie's brand says! She said, and I quote "..it's 2 Lazy 2 P.....he always got a big kick out of telling people what his brand was. :)"

But I didn't get it till later when I said it out loud to myself....uncle Ollie had a sense of humor, didn't he?!

Before I posted this yesterday I swear I looked everywhere for record of another ancestor's brand that I knew I had, but couldn't find it anywhere. Well, I just found it! It has been living in my computer since 2007 and unfortunately I don't know what book it came from. (How embarrassing!) However I do want to post this page of "Recorded Marks and Brands" because someone else who has ancestors in Utah may benefit.

I ran a search on Ernie Badal (mainly because I couldn't read his signature) and learned that he was on the baseball team in 1944 when I found the following document:

Last week I went to the Macedonia Cemetery in Macclenny, Florida to take a couple of volunteer photos for Find A Grave. While I was there I looked around and took photos of some of the headstones that caught my eye. There were some beautiful ones and I wanted to share them.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Family Fun With Thomas The Train

Did you know that a Blackberry can also be a treasure chest? I didn't either until last night. I was thinking about the grand-kids and how much I miss them when I remembered this treasured video that I recorded while I was in Idaho last May.

Dad took mom and I to Butterburrs for dinner (I was all about the pie). One of my sons and his little family met us there. It was pretty busy so we just sat at the counter. That night was college graduation so the whole town was pretty busy. Thank goodness little Spence brought Thomas the train with him.

While we were waiting for our food my grandson got out his train and set it on the counter and aimed it down towards great-grandma. The train comes past my dad, past me, and then mom turned it around so it would go back to Spence. Each time it went past we had to move things out of the way and make sure that Thomas didn't derail off on to the floor.  We must have done that for about 5 minutes until I realized that I had a Blackberry in my purse and I had better get to recording this! I mean, come on, playing trains with mom, dad, grandma, great-grandma, and great-grandpa; how often does that happen? It never would have happened when I was a kid.

So you see, I may be a mom and a grandma, but I am really just a big kid (you should see me at the amusement park).
