Treasure Chest Thursday -- My Photo Pedigree

I was trying to figure out all night last night what sort of treasure I was going to post this week, and then it came to me. I am very fortunate to have as many photos of my ancestors as I do, because I am sure there are others out there who don't have many at all. So I want to share my photo pedigree that I have hanging on the wall (eventually I will get a frame).

This is indeed a priceless treasure to me. Hopefully someday I can add to it.

Meek Brothers -- School Days

Here are some more precious treasures separated from the Meek Family.

The following is John Meek's 4th grade report card from Mattie V. Rutherford School dated 1933.

The next one is William Meek's 7th grade report card dated 1933.

Here is a 1930 school picture of one of the boys. It is not labeled so I am not sure which brother it is. I am guessing that it is either John as a first grader, or William as a fourth grader.

Next we have a program for the 1938 graduating class of Andrew Jackson Senior High School.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1908 Postcard

This week's treasure from great-grandma's stuff is another postcard. The front of the postcard is a precious piece of artwork signed by Mary Sigabeeker and printed by The Campbell Art Co. in 1908.

It was sent to my great-great grandma Piggott from her daughter Alice.

It is stamped Randolph, Mar 9, 1908, and is addressed to Mrs. E. C. Piggott, Bloomington, Idaho.

It reads:

Dear Folks at home --
Hope everything there is
favorable & that Pa is
improving. Tell Mary all
her folks are ok. I was
there nearly all day
yesterday & talked
to them twice today
including Lillie & Ted.
I am going to a theatre
tonight if all is well.
"Walters Stock Co." The mud
is awful here. Love to all
Alice

John Meek III, The Boxer

Here is another lost Meek family treasure. This precious photo is actually on a postcard. There is a small newspaper article taped to the back.

It reads:
Jacksonville has a pair of boxing champions in the making.

John and William Meeks are only seven years of age, and they weigh but forty-six pounds, but they are truly classy boxers, and quite potent sluggers. The paper-weight battlers gave an interesting four-round bout before the junior chamber of commerce last night, and unlike so many boxing exhibitions, there was no clinching. The tiny tots gave action from the first gong.

The boys are sons of John Meeks, who will be remembered as one of the veteran ball players of Jacksonville. In the days of the great city league here several seasons ago. Meeks was a star first baseman, Neal Tate, Hal Roberts, Lee Haley, Big Six Jones, Frank Mitchell, Ada, and his name is always linked with that of Joe Zavatky, String Gandy, Middlebrooks, MacSelph, and a host of others.

I have not been able to find anything else indicating that John Meek II was a baseball player.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- Stock Certificates

This week I want to share a couple of treasures from my special shoebox. I have here a couple of stock certificates for 15 shares belonging to my grandfather, Calvin Buck Smedley, from the Bear Lake Phosphate Mining Company. One was dated 12 May 1921 and the other 12 July 1921.

The Bear Lake Phosphate Company began mining around 1920 and ceased in 1925. The property changed several hands after that. You can see photos and read more about it here.

Too bad we can't cash in on these -- ; D

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1910 Postcard

This week's treasure from great-grandma's stuff is a postcard with a New Year's design that was sent to her five months before she married great-grandpa from her 16 year old sister, Iva Madsen. The postcard was actually sent in May.

Stamped Byron, Wyo May 20, 1910 and addressed to Miss Hazel Madsen, Montpelier, Idaho, the postcard reads:

Byron, Wyo
May 16, 1910:
Dear Sister:
Why do you

us? are you dead
or alive? a person
would think you were;
just surprise me and ans my letter.
tell all hello, and ans
soon
(Iva)

How is you and W. P.
making it?
